Iraq — crypto regulation
Status: banned · Last reviewed 2026-11-05
The Central Bank of Iraq banned cryptocurrency dealings in 2017, reinforced by Circular No. 125/5/9 (2021). Banks, payment providers and money exchangers may not handle digital assets, and no crypto firms are licensed. In May 2026 the Kurdistan Region's Interior Ministry formally banned citizens and businesses from crypto transactions and online forex speculation, warning of immediate enforcement. The CBI is pursuing its own digital currency while keeping the crypto ban.
