Georgia — crypto regulation
Status: legal · Last reviewed 2026-11-05
Crypto is legal and regulated through a National Bank of Georgia (NBG) registration regime for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) in place since 2023, built on the AML/CFT law and the Organic Law on the NBG; crypto is not legal tender. Amendments in force from 17 Dec 2025 gave the NBG full prudential, consumer-protection and cybersecurity supervision of VASPs. A stablecoin offering rule (Order 52/04, Mar 2026) requires 1:1 reserves, redemption rights and prior NBG consent, and Tether announced a lari-pegged GELT stablecoin with the government in May 2026. Sep 2026 amendments set minimum capital of GEL 150,000–350,000 by service type, with transition to 2027.
